Now, let’s look at Quaker’s equivalent (also peach flavored). It is 130 calories and has 20 calories from fat (2.0 g total). The regular oatmeal has a whopping 27 grams of carbohydrates and 12 of sugar.
The Importance Of The Low Carb / Low Sugar / High Protein Combination: The reason that the medifast diet works so well is because of ketosis. This means that the low amount of carbs and sugar and the high amount of protein convinces your body to turn on it’s fat and effectively burn it. Sure, the regular oatmeal is pretty low in calories and fat. Chose your typical protein bar or pudding and you’re going to find tons of sugar and very little protein. This isn’t the case with the medifast equivalents.
OATMEAL BUTTERSCOTCH COOKIES
3/4 cup butter, softened
3/4 cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup packed light brown sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
3 cups quick-cooking oats, uncooked
1 pkg (10-oz) butterscotch chips
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
In a large mixing bowl, beat butter, granulated sugar and brown sugar until well blended. Add eggs and vanilla; blend thoroughly. Stir together the flour, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon; gradually add to the butter mixture beating until well blended. Stir in the oats and butterscotch chips; mix well. Drop by teaspoonfuls onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake at 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. Cool slightly; remove from cookie sheets to wire racks. Cool completely.
OATMEAL APPLE COOKIES
3/4 cup butter-flavored shortening
1 1/4 cups firmly packed brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup milk
1 1/2 tsps vanilla
3 cups quick-cooking oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/4 tsps cinnamon
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup peeled, diced apples
3/4 cup raisins, optional
3/4 cup walnut pieces, optional
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Grease baking sheets and set aside.
Cream shortening, brown sugar, egg, milk and vanilla at medium speed of an electric mixer for 1 1/2 minutes. In a small bowl, combine flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt. Beat into the creamed mixture with the mixer on low speed until well blended. Stir in the apples, raisins and nuts, if using. Stir in the oats. Drop the mixture by rounded tablespoonfuls on the prepared baking sheets. Bake at 375 degrees for 13 minutes. Cool 2 minutes on the baking sheet. Then remove the cookies to a wire rack to finish cooling. Makes about 2 1/2 dozen cookies.
Yield: Apprx 4 dozen
